Depending on where you live, you may have some more common species or you won’t have some of these at all, but we will lay out the general types for many people around the world.

Bass

Firstly, there is bass. There are largemouth, smallmouth, hybrids, spotted, and even more specific types of bass. Bass are typical targeted more for sport rather than for food. In fact, thousands of anglers target bass in huge tournaments, especially in America.

Bass can be found in just about any freshwater system out there. They love deep holes, eddies in the current, and a lot of structure. In many parts of North America, bass will be the most popular fish targeted in fresh water. Depending on where you are geographically, the type or number of water bodies you have access to will vary. So, it is up to you to figure out what you have access to.

Freshwater locations include lakes, rivers, creeks, and ponds. Each body of fresh water can harbor different species of fish. Bass can be found in any of these.

Perch

Another very popular freshwater species that can be found in many corners of the world is perch. Perch are far smaller than bass in most cases, but they make excellent food if you want to harvest these fish ethically and legally. They also make great sport fish if you want constant action.

Perch can be found from the middle east, to the Nordic countries, to America, perch can be found and targeted in fresh water. This is why perch can be so popular.

Another reason for the popularity of perch is that it can be targeted in all seasons. Although this is the case with many fish on this list, perch are very active in all the seasons, whereas some species will be much more lethargic.

Depending on your area, walleye are incredible freshwater fish. These are mostly found in northern America and much of Canada. Walleye are also some of the tastiest fish out there, so if you feel like putting food on the table in a responsible way, this is one of the best options there is.

Walleye are drawn to cold, deep water. Although they aren’t usually very big, they can grow quite large in certain areas of the world. Like perch, walleye are active all year round, and even more so in the winter. So, ice fishing and late fall fishing are very popular to target walleye.

Many anglers complain that walleye do not put up a good fight and can be kind of boring to target, but this isn’t always the case. Walleye can be really fun to pursue even though they might not put up the biggest fight companied to other fish.

Freshwater is different than saltwater in a number of ways. One of the biggest aspects is what can be caught. In many salt water situations, you may not know what you have on the line until it breaches the surface. There is such a diversity of species that it is a gamble in many cases. Freshwater fishing is far more enclosed. You will use specific presentations to target specific fish. Targeting walleye specifically will allow for greater success.

Carp

Depending on where you live, carp can either be loved or hated. Some people see carp as prized trophy fish whereas others see them as pests. In either situation, they can be targeted for sport. Especially in the U.K., carp are priced and respect amongst anglers. In fact, there are many anglers in Europe who target carp almost exclusively.

In North America, carp are generally not as highly regarded. Actually, there is a community of people who bowfish for carp and dispose of their bodies. This may seem like a bit much, but they can be pests to a lot of lakes and ponds.

Traditionally, carp can be fished for with bread, corn, and other baits. Their large, strong bodies give an excellent fight. When hooking into a carp, you better be ready for a ride because they can be very fun o fight.

Catfish

Like many of the species on this list, catfish can be found all over the world. From the ponds of Thailand to the rivers of Sweden to the creeks of Canada, catfish are all over the place.

Catfish have long, thick bodies that allow for a lot of power when swimming. These fish are generally bottom feeders, so a lot of the presentations used sit on the bottom and are natural rather than lures. This includes stink bait, hot dogs, and many other presentations.

Catfish also make really good food if you choose to harvest them responsibility. They are excellent friend and considered a delicacy in some areas of the United States. There are a few types of catfish, and each one has a better plate value than the other.

Some of the types of catfish include flathead, blue, channel, and many more depending on your location.

Hopefully, you now know a little bit more about freshwater fishing and what species can be targeted in these bodies of water. After all, not knowing the fish you want to target can make for a tough trip, especially in fresh water. Good luck and happy fishing!
